Chubby diaper-wearers and skinny jeans don't sound like a great combination but retailers say their lines for little kids are selling fast. Adult-style clothes for kids, including skinny jeans for tots as young as 3 months, have been helping keep the children's apparel sector healthy amid declining sales elsewhere. Retailers say parents cutting back spending buy their kids the styles they can't afford—or fit into—themselves.

Designers stress that despite the adult look of the styles, comfort never gets sacrificed to fashion. "It doesn't matter how cute it is," babyGap's head of design tells the Wall Street Journal. "If they can't crawl around and move, it doesn't get out of the fit room." Unlike the adult version, the chain's 1969 Denim skinny jeans for kids have plenty of room for diapers.
