A South Carolina mother has admitted to smothering her two toddler sons, saying she didn’t think she could support them, according to police. The bodies were found in a car submerged in a river, but the woman, 29-year-old Shaquan Duley, allegedly told police that they were dead before she strapped them into their car seats; she smothered them with her own hands at a nearby motel, CNN reports.

She then sent the car into the river, police say, and tried to pass if off as an accident. "She just wanted to get rid of the children, as sad as that may be,” the sheriff said in a press conference. He said Duley had had an argument with her mother about the children earlier. “I believe she was fed up with her mother telling her she couldn’t take care of her children,” he speculated.
