As the battle over the Ground Zero Mosque rages on and on and on, insiders are offering a reality check of sorts: the odds of it actually getting built are dwindling to just about zero. The group behind the project hasn't even made a dent in the $100 million it hopes to raise, notes Politico—its latest fundraising report shows the group brought in just $18,255 in 2008. The developers have no blueprint, no architect, no engineer, no lobbyists—and they're now being buried under huge amounts of bad publicity.
Real estate insiders say the group appears to have utterly failed to reach out to politicians and religious groups that could have helped them gauge how much resistance the project would face. "This is amateur hour,” one prominent supporter of the project admits. “That’s why the idea that this is some big conspiracy is so silly. Yes, you could say this is not a well-oiled machine.”
