At least two tourists were killed today in the Philippines, after an ex-police officer took their bus hostage in a bizarre bid to get his old job back. The ex-officer, Rolando Mendoza, flagged down the bus in Manila about 10 hours ago, wearing his police uniform, CNN reports. Once on board, he brandished an automatic weapon, told the driver to lock the door, and posted messages in the bus window, one of which detailed the criminal charges that had cost him his job, according to Sky News.
He later released 9 of his 25 hostages. But eventually, police lost patience and surrounded the bus. “I can see there are many SWAT teams arriving, they are all around,” Mendoza cried in a live radio interview on the bus. “I know they will kill me, I'm telling them to leave because anytime I will do the same here.” Shortly before police stormed the bus, the driver escaped, and said the gunman had fired on the hostages, as local radio reported Mendoza screaming, “All the hostages are dead!” Police then stormed the bus, resulting in a hail of gunfire. Mendoza was killed, but at least seven hostages appear to have survived. (More Manila stories.)
