Twitter has unveiled the first major redesign of its homepage in the site's four-year history. The relaunched site, which will be rolled out to users over the next few weeks, will give tweeters a better, faster experience, say execs. The new site is split into two panes, with the second one featuring multimedia content that users can now view without navigating away from the main view of tweets, CNET reports.

"We needed a better site," Twitter co-founder Biz Stone said. The redesign will make it easier to display ads, and executives hope Twitter will now be better able to compete with Google and Facebook for advertising dollars. The company has announced deals with 16 partners, including Flickr and YouTube, that will allow them to display content in the second pane.
