"On Sunday the last bill is due and the First World War finally, financially at least, terminates for Germany," declares the newspaper Bild. The penalties insisted upon by the Allies in the Versailles treaty brought financial misery to Germany, a sentiment that Adolf Hitler exploited to gain power. He vowed to "tear up this treaty."
