Meg Whitman and Jerry Brown took the gloves off yesterday and went mano a mano over illegal immigration in a televised, Spanish language debate. Brown blasted Whitman for having employed an illegal maid, Nicandra Diaz Santillan. Whitman, in turn, accused him of being behind her sudden surfacing: "You should be ashamed for sacrificing Nicky Diaz on the altar of your political ambitions," she said.

"Don't run for governor if you can't stand up on your own two feet and say, 'Hey, I made a mistake, I'm sorry, let's go on from here,'" Brown fired back. "You have blamed her, blamed me, blamed the left, blamed the unions, but you don't take accountability." It was, notes the Los Angeles Times, quite a departure from the candidates' earlier, more civil, exchanges.
