Flames Heat Up, Embarrass Wild
Minnesota Wild's defenceman Martin Skoula, of the Czech Republic, left, looks on as Calgary Flames' Alex Tanguay celebrates his game winning goal during third period NHL hockey action in Calgary, Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2007. The Flames beat the Wild 5-3 giving the Wild their first loss of the season. (AP...   (Associated Press)

The Wild, off to their best start in franchise history, seemed to be cruising toward victory against the Flames: Nine minutes into the game they led 3-0, but the Flames battled back, scoring 3 times during a 5-minute stretch in the second period to tie it up. Calgary would score twice more in the third in what the Star Tribune calls the Wild's "most remarkable collapse in franchise history."

Things turned when Jarome Iginla scored from the high post; Wild goalie Niklas Backstrom argued, saying he was bumped, but the ref wasn't having it. After that, things got out of hand. Said one Wild player: "We stopped playing as a team. We had a few breaks against us and it was a snowball effect. We're not proud of that game." (More NHL stories.)
