(AP Photo/Charles Dharapak) In a drive to cut the deficit, a GOP committee called for an end to a $2.5 billion dollar welfare program this week—which might have been a clever move if the program hadn’t already expired, notes Arthur Delaney at the Huffington Post. The committee’s leader slammed the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program as “expanding dependence on government.” The attempted trimming was part of the Republicans’ “YouCut” plan. “In addition to saving taxpayers $25 billion over the next 10 years, cutting the emergency fund from the president's failed stimulus package will refocus temporary assistance on its rightful role,” said Rep. Tom Price. “What's next—claiming savings for cutting New Deal work programs that were terminated over 70 years ago?” asks a House Democrat.
