First Kanye West called George Bush a racist. Then Bush called the moment “disgusting.” Then Kanye accepted the blame. The latest in the Bush/Kanye mess, brought to you by Matt Lauer and Twitter:

  • Kanye West told Lauer he understood Bush’s feelings.
  • Then the rapper went on a 20-plus-post Twitter rant about his interview with Lauer, which he called “brutal," the New York Times notes.

  • Lauer, Kanye said, “tried to force my answers” while playing distracting clips of embarrassing incidents. That left tweeting Kanye feeling “very alone very used very tortured," PopEater points out.
  • But hopefully “everyone will see and understand one day."
  • Bush told Lauer he “appreciated” Kanye’s mea culpa (though he flubbed the rapper’s name, calling him Conway before correcting himself). “I am not a hater. I don’t hate Kanye West,” the former president said. “Nobody wants to be called a racist, if in your heart you believe in equality of race.”
