WWI Vet Missing for 92 Years Is Finally Home

The remains of a US soldier missing since World War I have been identified and returned to his family for burial, reports CNN. The 28-year-old-man was killed in a battle in France on September 16, 1918, and his body, along with those of two other soldiers, was buried nearby. The military tried to find the remains after the war, without success.

In a twist of fate, French citizens looking for metal in the area in 2006 stumbled upon the remains and World War I artifacts. Forensics finally established the identity of Army Private Henry Weikler. Says a grand-niece in Pennsylvania: “My mother and I only learned about this a few weeks ago, we didn’t even know he was missing in action because it was so long ago.” (More World War I stories.)
