It’s time for the media to end its Palin infatuation—and for Sarah Palin to end her media obsession. The need for a divorce was never more clear than last week, when controversy bubbled up over Palin’s "crosshairs" map and her subsequent "blood libel" speech, writes Ross Douthat for the New York Times. The absurdity of the Palin-media marriage goes both ways: The media is "consistently unfair" and "gossipy and hostile," but also obsessed. Palin "officially despises the ‘lamestream’ media," but "press coverage is clearly the oxygen she craves."

Here's how the breakup should happen: The media needs to stop covering her like she's the country's No. 1 conservative politician. ("Every time you’re tempted to parse her tweets for some secret code or crucial dog whistle, stop and think, this woman has fewer Twitter followers than Ben Stiller, and then go write about something else instead.") As for Palin: "Take a break from Facebook and Fox News,” writes Douthat. "You were an actual politician once (remember that?), but you’re becoming the kind of caricature that your enemies have always tried to make of you."
