Two Miami police officers—one male, one female—were killed in a shootout today while serving a homicide warrant in a crime-heavy neighborhood, the Miami Herald reports. A suspect also died in the gunfight, which was the deadliest in decades for the Miami-Dade force. Several suspects reportedly fled the scene, leading authorities to shut down traffic on I-95.

"This unit is very well-trained, very well-armed, and highly protects itself," said Mayor Carlos Alvarez. "So they know what they're doing. It was just a tragic incident that we see here too often in Miami-Dade, of a violent suspect who could care less." (Read more Miami stories.)
