A police commander and three officers were shot yesterday afternoon in their Detroit precinct station house by a 38-year-old gunman, who was then shot and killed by police, reports the Detroit News. The commander was shot in the hand and side, and underwent surgery that evening; he is in critical condition. Two officers were shot in the head, but are alert and talking. A third officer was shot in the chest, but she was wearing a bulletproof vest and suffered only minor injuries.

The gunman was armed with a small, pistol-grip shotgun, according to witnesses, but no details about him have been officially released yet. Like most Detroit police precincts, there are no metal detectors or protective barriers in the entrance. “Incidents like this are very sobering and remind us of just how vulnerable we all are,” said the police chief.
