President Obama took a few moments at the beginning of a planned speech in Michigan today to address the topic of the hour/day/week: “We are following today’s events in Egypt very closely,” he said. “We’ll have more to say as this plays out. But what is absolutely clear is that we are witnessing history unfold. It’s a moment of transformation that’s taking place because the people of Egypt are calling for change.”
He praised the young people who are at the forefront of the revolution. “We want those young people and we want all Egyptians to know that America will do everything we can to support an orderly and genuine transition to democracy in Egypt,” he said. From there, he returned to speaking about domestic issues. The remarks were carried on Egypt’s state-run TV, CNN reports, a telling move from a station normally dedicated to pro-government propaganda. (More Barack Obama stories.)
