Three of the six people shot dead at a political gathering in Tucson that wounded Rep. Gabrielle Giffords last month were shot in the head, according to autopsy results released by the county medical examiner. The youngest victim, 9-year-old Christina Taylor Green, died from a single shot that tore through her heart and kidney. The results, along with statements from surviving victims, show that each of the 31 shots Jared Lee Loughner is accused of firing struck somebody in the crowd, the Arizona Daily Star reports.
Loughner has been charged with 49 criminal charges relating to the six deaths and the wounding of 13 people. His lawyers—who sought to block the release of the autopsy results—are trying to push his trial off to early 2013, reports the Arizona Republic. The judge in the case against Loughner has suggested a September trial date, but his lawyers have requested a later date, citing the need to gather evidence to save him from the death penalty.
