Facebook is in talks with would-be partners about ways it could gain access to the millions of Chinese people just dying to friend someone. The talks are in preliminary stages, and might not amount to anything, sources tell Bloomberg. Right now, Facebook is censored in China, as are Twitter, YouTube, Google, and other US sites that won’t follow Beijing’s rules about self-censoring content.
Speculation about such a move has been rampant since Mark Zuckerberg’s December vacation in China, during which he met executives from companies like Baidu, Sina Corp., and China Mobile. Facebook also announced in February that it would open a Hong Kong office, bringing it closer to Chinese advertisers. (More Facebook stories.)
