World / Barack Obama Obama, Cameron: Gadhafi Must Step Down But everyone needs to be patient By Kate Seamons, Newser Staff Posted May 25, 2011 8:29 AM CDT Copied US President Barack Obama, right, is greeted by British Prime Minister David Cameron as he arrives for a meeting at 10 Downing Street in London, Wednesday, May 25, 2011. (AP Photo/Sang Tan) President Obama called for Moammar Gadhafi to step down in February. Now he and David Cameron are singing the tune in unison. Speaking at a joint news conference in London today, the two leaders restated their position: Military operations in Libya will continue until Gadhafi stops his attacks against civilians and surrenders power. "There will not be a let-up in the pressure we are applying," said Obama, who emphasized, more than once, how long a road he expected this to be. "David and I both agree that you can't put boots on the ground in Libya," he said, adding that the "enormous sacrifices" that are being born by the NATO allies have made "a huge difference." But ultimately this is going to be a "slow, steady process. We've been extraordinarily successful in avoiding civilian casualties. That means that sometimes we may have to be more patient than people would like." Added Cameron, "I would agree that the two key things here are patience and persistence."
