After her mother died for unknown reasons, a 3-year-old New Zealand girl was on her own in the house—and managed to survive until she was rescued. Shylah Silbery spent two days living off of milk, cheese, and lasagna she found in the refrigerator, the AP reports. “She got the milk out of the fridge for a drink. Her mum had some leftovers in the fridge and she's eaten those,” her grandmother tells the New Zealand Herald.

Shylah took comfort in her teddy bear until members of her family called the house, concerned about her mother. Police came to the house and asked the girl to pull a coffee table to the door and unlock it. “We didn't think she would manage but she did, and she took the chain off the front door,” an officer said. After she told police her mother wouldn’t wake up, Shylah was taken to the hospital, where she stayed for a few days to recover from dehydration and diaper rash. Autopsy results for Lauren Silbery are pending; police don’t suspect foul play. (More survival stories.)
