Election 2012: New Poll Shows Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney Tied for Second Behind a Damaged Herman Cain

Don’t look now, but Newt Gingrich appears to have crawled his way into the top tier of the GOP presidential field. A new CBS News poll has Gingrich tied with Mitt Romney for second place, at 15% each. Ahead of both is Herman Cain with 18%, but the poll shows he has been damaged somewhat by his sexual harassment scandal. (Also in the poll's top five positions: 17% for "don't know" and 14% for "someone else.")

While 61% say the Cain scandal won’t affect how they vote, 30% say it will make them less likely to vote for him—and that jumps to 38% among women. Cain’s support among women has declined accordingly, plummeting from a then-leading 28% last month to 15% now. Cain's support amongst Tea Partiers and conservatives is down as well, and both he and Romney are down overall from last month, while Gingrich is trending upward.
