The Newt Gingrich comeback train just keeps on rolling: He’s now just 2 points behind Mitt Romney in New Hampshire, with 27% to Romney’s 29%, according to the latest poll from the New Hampshire Journal. That's within the poll’s margin of error, and well ahead of the other candidates—Ron Paul is in third with 16%, while Herman Cain has fallen all the way to 10%. Everyone else is in the single digits.
No candidate has even come close to Romney in any previous NH Journal poll—in October, Gingrich was in third with 10% to Romney’s 41%. Asked why they supported Newt, 44% of his fans said they were won over by his depth of knowledge, while another 10% cited his strong debate performances. Gingrich also performed better among conservatives, Tea Partiers, and men than Romney did, while Romney ruled among independents and women. (More Newt Gingrich stories.)
