Need another reason to fume over Facebook? Slate writer Elizabeth Weingarten found one after forgetting her new Macbook Air in the back of a New York taxi. "Hands shaking," she called the cab company, she writes—but no luck. "Then, I slumped against the side of a building and sobbed." Later, prompted by an email from a colleague, she checked the messages that Facebook "hides" under "Other"—and sure enough, a friendly fellow had contacted her about her lost computer.

"How could Facebook do this?" asks Weingarten of the nearly secret "Other" tab. "Why would they do this?" Turns out Facebook wants to weed out messages from non-friends, especially spammers, so they don't clutter your inbox. Weingarten sighed with relief—somewhat. She contacted her laptop savior, who promises to mail it to her. And, you know, "thanks, Facebook, for helping this nice man return my laptop. But please try to explain your services better. I suspect many people would be grateful." (Read about a Facebook glitch that allows access to private photos.)
