We already knew Jon Huntsman was polling terribly in South Carolina, but here's some additional perspective for you: He's polling behind Stephen Colbert, who is neither a politician nor running for president. Colbert was unsuccessful in his attempt to get his name on the SC ballot, but Public Policy Polling decided to see how he would have done. Not well—he polled at 5%—but better than Huntsman, who polled at 4%.
Colbert would, however, have gotten Democrats to the polls: 34% of Democrats planning to vote in the state's open primary supported him; Mitt Romney was a distant second with 15% of the support. That leads PPP's Tom Jensen to believe Colbert could actually have walked off with a fourth place finish at around 10% to 15% of the vote. Colbert also wanted a referendum on the ballot concerning whether corporations are people, and PPP found that just 33% of likely SC voters think they are. (More Stephen Colbert stories.)
