Mitt Romney's campaign machine has revved into overdrive in Michigan, sending top operatives to the state and pouring money into TV ads, including a $1.3 million buy yesterday—not that Team Romney thinks it's got anything to worry about. Despite the most recent poll data, Romney's Michigan backers see a Feb. 28 victory here as his destiny, Politico reports. "This is Mitt country—Mitt's state," said one powerful county executive and Romney backer. "I would be very, very surprised if we don't chalk up a big win."
Romney, after all, is from Michigan, and his father was a much-beloved governor there. He also has a strong organization, and the backing of a majority of the state's GOP politicians. But outsiders think Rick Santorum has a real shot. Michigan has a passionate contingent of social conservatives, and its voters have a contrarian streak. "There is some 'establishmentitis,'" says one Republican operative. Another agrees, "If this turns out to be a pitchfork primary, Romney is going to have some trouble." (More Michigan stories.)
