Trayvon Martin's Girlfriend: I Told Him to Run

Moments before he was shot and killed by George Zimmerman, Trayvon Martin was on the phone with his girlfriend, fearful because he was being followed. "He said this man was watching him, so he put his hoodie on. He said he lost the man," the 16-year-old girl says. "I asked Trayvon to run, and he said he was going to walk fast. I told him to run but he said he was not going to run." She says Martin ultimately thought he'd escaped, but then Zimmerman cornered him, ABC News reports.

"Trayvon said, 'What are you following me for,' and the man said, 'What are you doing here.' Next thing I hear is somebody pushing, and somebody pushed Trayvon because the headset just fell. I called him again and he didn't answer the phone," she says. Call logs confirm the phone call between Martin and the girl happened just five minutes before police got to the scene. ABC News also notes that Zimmerman, a self-appointed Neighborhood Watch volunteer, was not part of a registered Neighborhood Watch group. Florida State Attorney Norm Wolfinger has ordered a grand jury investigation of the case, WESH 2 adds. The Justice Department and the FBI are also getting involved. (More Trayvon Martin stories.)
