John Roberts 'Took One for the Country'

Sounds like Thomas Friedman has a new personal hero. His name: Chief Justice John Roberts. The judge's historic Supreme Court ruling on ObamaCare has "even touched some conservatives," writes Friedman in the New York Times. "It’s the feeling that it has been so long since a national leader ripped up the polls and not only acted out of political character but did so truly for the good of the country." Like an American war veteran, he "took one for the country."

Now if only President Obama would follow Roberts' lead with a daring economic policy that sets partisanship aside. The time is ripe, says Friedman, who argues that newfound natural gas and technological advances are creating blue-collar jobs, while cloud computing is "giving anyone with a creative spark cheap, powerful tools." So Obama should drop the wedge issues and strike "a Simpson-Bowles-like grand bargain," unleashing American economic power that ensures "no one could touch us as a country."
