A sleeping Kenyan family suffered one of the most hellish awakenings imaginable when they were attacked by a pack of hyenas that had entered the family compound. Two children were killed and six other family members were injured in the attack in a village in northeastern Kenya, ABC reports. Five of the injured were treated at a local hospital and released, but a severely injured 10-year-old boy has been airlifted to a hospital in Nairobi.

"Rangers pursued and eliminated the hyenas," said the Kenyan Wildlife Service, which is paying for the injured boy's treatment. The KWS says it is working with the local population on ways to avoid conflict with wild animals, incidents of which are growing along with the human population. Earlier this month, the KWS had to drive away elephants that had strayed into homes in the same part of the country. (More animal attack stories.)
