Fleeing Suspect Dies After Plunge Into Niagara Gorge
Emergency crews rescued a police officer with a broken leg from down Niagara Gorge yesterday. The officer fell down while chasing a suspect, who died in the chase.   (Niagara Region Police photo)

A suspect is dead and a Niagara police officer injured with a broken leg after a chase led to both men spilling over a stone wall and into the 100-feet-deep Niagara Gorge yesterday afternoon, reports the Toronto Sun. Police aren't saying what led to the incident, but local residents said they heard gunshots during the chase. One man said the suspect had been detained by a cop when he suddenly took off, so the police officer chased after him.

The officer was lifted out of the gorge around 7:30pm by emergency crews, and the body of the deceased man removed around 9pm. “We’re trying to figure out exactly what it is that happened," said one investigator. "This is fairly early." (More Niagara Falls stories.)
