Next time you're driving in Toronto, beware of a hazard on the road: the mayor. Rob Ford was photographed reading a stack of papers while driving on the city's busy Gardiner Expressway yesterday, in a shot snapped by a Twitter user who says traffic was moving at around 45mph, reports the Globe and Mail. When reporters asked him about the photo, he admitted reading while driving and complained about "ridiculous questions." He explained he was trying to "catch up on my work and you know I keep my eyes on the road, but I'm a busy man."
Reading while driving doesn't violate the province's distracted driving laws, but a driver could be charged if doing so contributed to a mishap that is illegal, like an unsafe lane change, according to the city's police department, which has urged Ford to hire a driver. "Mr. Mayor ... please get a driver," a spokesman wrote on the department's official Facebook page. "It is obvious that you are busy enough to require one and no amount of money you are saving by not having one is worth the life of one of your citizens." (More Toronto stories.)
