What's the White House Worth?
Expect to pay $1.5 billion if the White House ever goes on the market.   (?)

Just for fun, the Wall Street Journal asked a housing expert to appraise three famous DC-area residences that have hosted at least one of our presidents. The history makes them priceless, but that aside, here's what they found:

  • George Washington's Mount Vernon: To move into this elegant estate, you would have to shell out about $150 million. It's in a beautiful neighborhood with a view of the Potomac, but no bathrooms. You can enjoy two outhouses on the estate, though.

  • Thomas Jefferson's Monticello: Here's the most affordable property of the three. For a cool $106.5 million, you could move into this 43-room home. Expect to do lots of expensive remodeling to bring it up to modern standards.
  • The White House: Six floors, 13 bedrooms, 35 bathrooms, and a central location in the nation's capital—sounds like paradise, and constant renovations have increased the value of the Obama family's current home. "Frequent turnover" (every four to eight years, say) may level that out some, but you can still expect to pay $1.5 billion.
