OK, this time it's for real: Software designer John McAfee illegally entered Guatemala hoping for political asylum—instead he's been arrested by Guatemalan police, who plan to send him back to Belize. He should be back in Belize this morning, a Guatemalan government spokesman says. But McAfee's lawyer plans to seek an injunction to free his client; he tells ABC News McAfee should be released within hours. Just before his arrest, McAfee told ABC that Guatemalans understand his predicament.
When he tells people Belize's government wants to kill him, "instead of going, 'You're crazy,' they go, 'Yeah, of course they are,'" he said. As for Belize itself, people "think it's a wonderful, peaceful, lovely place, blue waters, so McAfee has got to be crazy. Maybe I am crazy. If I were, I wouldn't know," he told Reuters. Authorities there are after him because he refused to give the ruling party $2 million, he says. "The misunderstanding of the severity of their request for money was my big mistake." Other nuggets from the interview:
- Police raided his property over suspicions he was making synthetic drugs, but he says he stopped doing drugs after 1983. Before that, "I took drugs constantly, 24 hours of the day ... I was the worst drug abuser on the planet," McAfee said. "Then I finally went to Alcoholics Anonymous, and that was the end of it."
- Though he's lost much of his wealth, "My life has not declined," he noted. "My life has been on the increase ever since I decided that stuff—houses, money—doesn't mean much. I had more money than I could spend in million lifetimes. Why would I care?"
- As for the murder, he's facing a frame-up, he says: He and the neighbor "had one disagreement about a dog. I had disagreements with all my neighbors about my dogs. I had a disagreement with myself about my dogs." Had he done it, "Why would I leave behind the body and all the evidence?" he said. "I'm not stupid."
