The young woman whose gang rape galvanized supporters across India has died, reports AP. Her condition had deteriorated in recent days, as she suffered organ failure and brain damage. The 23-year-old was brutally attacked on a moving bus in New Delhi, then thrown onto a road. Police have arrested six suspects in the case. Activists have marched in India's biggest cities since the Dec. 16 assault to protest what they see as police apathy against sexual violence.

"She was courageous in fighting for her life for so long against the odds, but the trauma to her body was too severe for her to overcome," said a doctor at the Singapore hospital where she was transferred earlier this week. She "passed away peacefully." (More India stories.)
