Amid a national outpouring of rage and grief, the body of India's 23-year-old gang rape victim was quietly cremated today in a private ceremony, reports the AP. The unnamed victim was flown back to India from Singapore, where she died yesterday while receiving treatment for her injuries. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and ruling party chief Sonia Gandhi were on hand to meet the flight, which also carried members of the victim's family. Six men were yesterday charged in the brutal attack, and could face the death penalty.

But even as thousands marched and lighted candles in the woman's honor, demanding an end to the country's pervasive sexual violence, police in the state of West Bengal were investigating yet another gang rape and murder. A woman and her husband were headed home from their factory jobs when six men accosted them, pouring acid in the husband's mouth, and dragging the wife to a nearby farm. Police say she was found dead with multiple injuries. (More India stories.)
