Former Gen. Stanley McChrystal took a firm stance on gun control during a Morning Joe appearance today, demanding "serious action." Discussing the M-16 and M-4 assault weapons he used as a soldier, he noted that "the effects are devastating. ... That’s what our soldiers ought to carry. I personally don’t think there’s any need for that kind of weaponry on the streets and particularly around the schools in America."

Both James Holmes and Adam Lanza used AR-15s, civilian models of McChrystal's weapons, in mass shootings, MSNBC notes. "We’ve got to protect our children, we’ve got to protect our police, we’ve got to protect our population," McChrystal said. "Sometimes we talk about very limited actions on the edges, and I just don’t think that’s enough." He added: "The number of people in America killed by firearms is extraordinary compared to other nations, and I don’t think we’re a bloodthirsty country." (Gabby Giffords and her husband have launched a new gun-control group.)
