Teacher Who Backed Gay-Free Prom Under Fire

One Indiana town's quest to hold a competing "traditional" prom—that would be one in which gay students aren't permitted to attend—is spelling trouble for Diana Medley, a teacher who, crazily enough, doesn't even work for the school. Medley, you'll recall, is the special-education teacher who made such public comments as:

• "We don't agree with [homosexuality] and it's offensive to us. A gay person isn’t going to come up and make some change unless it’s to realize that it was a choice and they’re choosing God." When asked if she thought gay people have a purpose in life, Medley continued, "No, I honestly don't. Sorry, but I don't. I don't understand it."

But the principal of Sullivan High School notes that Medley "doesn’t speak for us, or represent us, or even work for us. She’s been associated with us, but that is unfortunate." The Indianapolis Star explains the tenuous connection: Medley works in a nearby school district, and is employed by the Northeast School Corp; Sullivan High is part of the Southwest School Corp. She attended the meeting that was held Sunday to discuss the potential of an alternate prom. This being the Internet age and all, Medley now finds herself the subject of what Huffington Post terms "what just might be the best Billy Madison mash-up ever": a video that splices her comments with the infamous "Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to you..." scene.
