Last Year's Diabetes Price Tag: $245B

As diabetes rates soar across the United States, so too do the costs associated with the disease. The diabetes price tag climbed to $245 billion last year, a 41% increase from the $174 billion spent just five years earlier, reports USA Today. The breakdown of that figure: $176 billion in direct medical expenses and $69 billion in indirect costs like lost productivity and unemployment. While the price of treating each person with diabetes hasn't changed much, the number of Americans with the disease has risen to 22.3 million, up from 17.5 million in 2007. (More diabetes stories.)
