Another coda to the 2012 presidential race, and it's a doozy: Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum came this close to mounting a Romney mutiny in the form of a Gingrich-Santorum ticket, reports Josh Green at Bloomberg Businessweek. Or maybe Santorum-Gingrich: The secret talks broke down because the two couldn't agree on who would get top billing. "In the end, it was just too hard to negotiate," says Gingrich. Santorum also confirms, saying he was "disappointed when Speaker Gingrich ultimately decided against this idea."
The two camps were in serious talks ahead of the Michigan primary in late February, figuring that if they could cause Romney to lose in his home state, he might never recover his front-runner status, writes Green. One Santorum adviser even pushed for Gingrich to drop out in the middle of a televised debate and endorse Santorum in the process. It wasn't to be.
