Canada: We Foiled 'al-Qaeda Supported' Terror Plot

Canadian officials say they have foiled an alleged major terror plot supported by al-Qaeda, after arresting two men in Montreal and Toronto, CBC reports. Suspects Chiheb Esseghaier, 30, and Raed Jaser, 35, are alleged to have been targeting a Toronto-area train route, with "support and guidance" coming from al-Qaeda in Iran. "We are alleging that these two individuals took steps and conducted activities to initiate a terrorist attack," said a police spokesperson. Police believe the attack was still in its planning stages, and the public was not at risk, reports the National Post.

The two men are not Canadian citizens, but police will not disclose where they're originally from. The suspects have been under surveillance for over a year, according to sources, and the operation was a collaboration between the FBI, the US Department of Homeland Security and Canadian law enforcement agencies.
