Can Joe Biden rescue gun control legislation? He's certainly going to try, he told a group of law enforcement officials at a meeting in his office yesterday, promising a cross-country campaign in which he'd stump for measures like universal background checks. "He was talking like he was going to be leading" the charge, a person who was at the meeting tells Politico. There's just one problem: Biden admitted he "hasn't really discussed" any of this with Barack Obama.

The first stop in Biden's tour will be South Carolina, where he's headlining a dinner with state Democratic officials today. Of course, South Carolina just happens to be an early primary state, the Washington Post observes, which is sure to raise speculation about a 2016 run—speculation Biden hasn't exactly discouraged. But the Post thinks such a bid would be a longshot; check out its full story for an extended explanation why.*
