And that ping-pong table isn't helping

If you're reading this at a job you hate, you're in good company: Some 70% of Americans either hate or are totally uninterested in their jobs, a Gallup study of 150,000 people finds. While some 18% are "actively disengaged"—for instance, actually looking for jobs online while at work, or "roam(ing) the halls spreading discontent"—another 50% are simply "disengaged," or not feeling particularly "inspired," the New York Daily News reports.

That's not just bad news for the workers: It's bad for the economy, as well, costing some $450 billion to $550 billion yearly in lack of productivity, days off, and workplace theft. One potential remedy, however, is working from home: Workers who had the opportunity were actually more engaged than their fellow employees. Benefits, on the other hand, aren't a big help, Today notes: Perks like ping-pong tables and massage did little to improve morale. (Read more jobs stories.)
