When a 95-year-old at a Chicago senior living community refused medical treatment, police were called in—and wound up killing the man with a bean-bag gun, the Chicago Tribune reports. Officers were called in Friday night to help a private ambulance crew deal with a "combative" resident being "involuntarily" sent for medical treatment.
When they arrived, John Wrana allegedly threatened them with a metal cane and a 2-foot metal shoehorn, and then, when he'd dropped those, a "12-inch butcher-type kitchen knife." Police hit Wrana with a Taser, which apparently failed to get him to stand down, so they shot him with the bean-bag round. He was still conscious as he was taken to the hospital. He later died of hemoperitoneum, meaning internal bleeding due to blunt-force trauma to the abdomen, caused by the bean-bag, the medical examiner ruled yesterday. (More police stories.)
