A newborn baby boy was found alive inside a plastic shopping bag in Jersey City yesterday. Doctors estimate the baby was born 11 weeks premature and weighs only 3 pounds. He was discovered by a group of teenagers in a pile of trash behind an apartment building, reports WABC. "We heard something crying in the bag, we thought it was an animal or something," says Keyshaun Wiggins, 15. "So we went up to the bag, and we saw the baby's hand."

The teens went and got the building's super, who called 911. "I opened the bag from the bottom and it still had the umbilical cord attached," the super's wife tells the Jersey Journal, adding she wasn't aware of anyone in the building who was pregnant. Authorities are now searching for the baby's mother. As WABC notes, she could have left the newborn at a hospital, police station, or fire station without being prosecuted, thanks to the city's Safe Haven law. (More newborn stories.)
