As India awaits the verdict in the trial of four men accused of gang-raping a student in New Delhi last December, news of yet another horrific attack has surfaced. A police officer in eastern India says she was raped by a group of bandits who stopped her family's vehicle as they escorted her sister's body to be cremated, Bloomberg reports. The officer, a 27-year-old widow and mother of two daughters, says she was raped despite pleas from her father and brother after the gang of ax-wielding men were infuriated by the family's lack of valuables.

The attack happened the same day that a photojournalist was gang-raped in Mumbai last month, but received little media attention because of the remote location in eastern India. Five men have been charged with rape and robbery and have confessed, officials say, "It is a crime to be borne as a woman in India," says the officer. "I worry about what society my two daughters will grow up in." She went back to work two weeks after the attack and plans to use the incident to fight for greater protection for women. "I am a police officer, I should not be fearful, she says. "I have responsibility to my department and to society. It is my job to fight this evil." (Read more India stories.)
