George HW Bush is making some headlines for serving as the official witness at a gay marriage over the weekend. Bush the elder attended the wedding in Maine of Bonnie Clement and Helen Thorgalsen, who own a store in Kennebunk, reports BuzzFeed. A Bush spokesman confirms to the Washington Post that George and Barbara “were private citizens attending a private ceremony for two friends.”

Says Clement, from her honeymoon in London: “They have always been not only supportive of us but including us in many of their social events when they are here in Kennebunkport. So it was very natural and normal for them to be invited and to attend.” Thorgalsen posted a Facebook photo of Bush signing the marriage license. And yes, he was wearing his trademark socks.
