(Newser) John Oliver's stint as Jon Stewart's replacement over the summer on the Daily Show has earned him more than rave reviews—he's just scored his own weekly show on HBO, reports Deadline. It sounds a bit like the Daily Show, in fact, billed as a satirical look at the week's news. The show debuts next year sometime and will air on Sunday nights. An HBO honcho says the network wasn't looking for a new show, but Oliver's guest-hosting gig sold executives there on his "singular perspective and distinct voice."

For his part, Oliver thanked Stewart in typical fashion: "He taught me everything I know. In fact, if I fail in the future, it’s entirely his fault." The Huffington Post notes that CNN also was interested in getting the UK native on board, but HBO won out. Oliver will join Bill Maher, whose Friday night show has become a staple at the network.
