Tomorrow, Bill and Sally Ann Okuly were set to celebrate their 41st wedding anniversary. The reasons why they won't are wrenching: It's not because of cancer (Sally survived that) or a motorcycle crash (which the Woodbridge, Va., woman also survived, six months ago). Last Sunday, Sally decided she was up for leaving her house for the first time since the crash, and headed across the street to a Wawa gas station to get coffee and a paper. She crossed in the crosswalk, with the signal indicating it was safe to do so, but was hit by a car.
A Prince William County police rep explains that 24-year-old Amanda Styles-Mays had a green light, but was making a left turn, reports Inside NOVA. "The driver of the Jeep Wrangler did not yield the right of way and proceeded to turn left, striking the pedestrian," he says in a statement. Okuly died the next day; Styles-Mays has been charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian and reckless driving, reports NBC Washington. (More pedestrian stories.)
