A wee hobbit ousted an animated princess at the weekend box office, says the Hollywood Reporter. Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug ($73.7 million) not only iced out Disney's Frozen ($22.2 million) domestically, it ranked No. 1 worldwide, banking a robust $131.2 million in 49 territories. Tyler Perry's A Madea Christmas ($16.2 million) fared so-so compared to his other debuts as zany Madea, while The Hunger Games: Catching Fire ($13.1 million) held ground above Thor: The Dark World ($2.7 million). Oscar fare American Hustle rocked in limited release, banking $690,000 at six theaters before expanding wide next week. (More movies stories.)
