A murderer serving five life sentences escaped from a Michigan prison yesterday and apparently abducted a woman, who managed to escape. Michael David Elliot, 40, who was convicted of murdering four people in a botched attempt to steal drug money in 1993, is still at large, CNN reports. Ionia Correctional Facility officials discovered Elliot missing last night; authorities believe he used a box cutter or a knife to carjack and abduct the "older" woman, WOOD-TV reports.

The woman locked herself in a bathroom when they stopped for gas just over the Michigan-Indiana state line roughly two hours later; when she didn't emerge, Elliot left in her red Jeep Liberty and she was able to call police. He had purchased about $10 of gas using coins and a $2 bill, and police estimate he can make it only about 100 miles on that fuel. Sources tell Fox 17 that officials found a hole in a fence on the prison grounds, and think that's how Elliot got out. (More escaped criminal stories.)
