More controversy for the NFL: Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice got into a fight with fiancee Janay Palmer at an Atlantic City casino early Saturday and knocked her out cold, ESPN reports by way of a court summons. A video posted to TMZ yesterday shows Rice dragging an apparently unconscious Palmer from an elevator, then laying her on the ground as he attempts to clear her legs from the elevator doors, in a scene said to have occurred after the fight. Rice's lawyer notes that though the video is authentic, it "is not the complete event, but is merely the end result of what transpired."

Both Rice and Palmer "struck each other with their hands" and were arrested for simple assault, police say. The pair then "returned home together after being detained," the Baltimore Ravens told USA Today. The NFL will review the incident under its personal conduct policy, and commissioner Roger Goodell has "wide discretion" regarding punishment, the Baltimore Sun reports. It notes Goodell suspended Ben Roethlisberger for six games—later reduced to four—after he was investigated for sexual assault, though he was never charged. Rice is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday. (More NFL stories.)
