5 Most Uplifting Stories of the Week
Firefighters outside the pet store in Franklin Borough, New Jersey.   (Franklin, N.J., police)

Two remarkable animal rescues highlight this week's list:

  • All Animals Saved in Pet Store Fire: A New Jersey police officer needed treatment for smoke inhalation after a selfless effort to rescue birds, gerbils, dogs, cats, and a chinchilla from a burning pet store. No animals were injured thanks to the rescue by police officers, firefighters, and volunteers. And the officer is fine now.
  • Daring Divers Save Choking Shark: Australian divers got up close and personal with a grey nurse shark that was in desperate trouble. Somehow the young female shark had managed to get an elastic band wrapped around her body that was restricting her breathing. Divers managed to safely get her to the surface and cut the cord.
  • New Testament Takes 2 Bullets for Bus Driver: Cops say "some kind of intervention" saved a bus driver in Dayton, Ohio, who was shot three times in an apparently random attack. Ricky Wagoner, 49, had a religious text called "The Message"—a modern translation of the New Testament—in his front pocket, which stopped two of the bullets.
  • Couple Finds $10M in Gold Coins on Dog Walk: A couple in California's Sierra Nevada region out for a stroll on their own property unearthed an estimated $10 million in US gold coins from the 1800s. They plan to stay anonymous, pay off their bills, and donate to local charities.
  • Forgotten Lottery Ticket Yields $1M Prize: Your early incentive for spring cleaning: A Georgia man tidying his room came across a month-old Powerball ticket that just happened to have five matching numbers—good for $1 million and a hug from mom.
